DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won the Budweiser Shootout on Saturday night, the first event in a week of racing leading up to the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 17. It was Earnhardt's first race in the No. 88 Chevrolet Impala SS fielded by Hendrick Motorsports, vindicating his decision during the off-season to leave the team founded by his father, six-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt.
Dale Jr. used the draft of teammate Jimmie Johnson, the 2007 NASCAR driving champion and a teammate at Hendrick Motorsports, to pass Tony Stewart's Toyota Camry to win the 70-lap exhibition race on Saturday night. Earnhardt has finished 1st or 2nd in the Budweiser Shootout five times since 2002.
